LaunchDarkly: Bringing Feature Flagging to the Enterprise

An Intellyx Brain Candy Brief

Web scale companies have long understood the importance of testing new features and interfaces with small subsets of their user population for their usability and effectiveness before general release. The most advanced of these organizations test hundreds or thousands of new features every month — without the users even realizing it.

During this process, called ‘feature flagging,’ they collect vast amounts of data on usability, preferences, and effectiveness. This approach has become synonymous with the continuous integration and continuous delivery (CI/CD) movement, yet most enterprises have not widely it because of the complexity of doing so.

LaunchDarkly aims to change this and democratize this approach. Its solution, which it calls a ‘feature management platform,’ makes feature flagging readily accessible to enterprise organizations and offers them the ability to rapidly test and control feature rollouts.

The company provides a set of software development kits (SDKs) for the platforms that enterprise organizations use most often in their development efforts. The company’s solution enables organizations to centrally manage feature testing and to involve non-development team members in the process. It allows them to control and manage feature rollout using an expansive range of controls, including releasing features to only specific users, to specific user classes, to a limited percentage of users, and to users in specific geographies.
